Writer in residence
Get out of that garret, you writer. They’re offering whole houses for the likes of you in Detroit. The organization Write A House, a group of writers, activists and artists in Detroit, is rennovating homes in the city, teaching young people trade skills in the process. But get this, they are also inviting writers to apply to live in these homes. To own them. For nowt. For good.
Here are some shots of a house currently being rennovated. The idea is that writer’s take them on when they are about 80% finished and take on the rest of the work themselves.
Hmmm… have they seen the shelves Martin Amis put up? Or Iris Murdoch’s grouting? I think this is a great idea. A free house to work in is every writers dream. But maybe don’t ask a professional procrastinator, sorry wordsmith, to just lay the last of the laminate flooring.
Can someone give Salman Rushdie a shout and tell him he’s missed a bit?
Trend. Will it catch on over here do you think?
I wish… I think it’s more the vast pool of empty property in Detroit, a city which has seen it’s population halve in recent years, increadibly. x
