Wrecked

I am back from a(nother) week of holiday – thanks Jill – and I’ve been back to the divine, remote Scottish bothy. Expect a week of posts about living by candle light, gathering firewood and sharing your garden with deer. But first, a demonstration that in my mania for unheated stone houses I am not alone.

Wreck of the week blog

No sooner did I arrive back at my London flat than I was googling how to buy a Scottish ruin of my own, the humbler the better. It led me to what is my newest must-read blog. Wreck Of The Week is run by Sue Greenwood, herself a lunchtime haunter of property websites. She decided to consolidate the wrecks and ruins that she found into this brilliant blog, which as well as featuring details of UK wrecks currently on the market, has sections offering advice on finding a dream wreck of your own.

Although the site includes lots of old houses, complete with swirly carpets and 50s kitchen cupboards, there is also a more modest strand of wreck on display. The hut below is in Devon, and was built in the 1920s by an artist. This, wreck-wranglers, is the dream, I guess. Something so remote and basic that no one else could possibly want it. One can dream…
