TV catch-up: property porn with a sting
Maybe it’s having been away from TV for a while, or maybe autumn television is always this good – for interiors nerds there’s loads to enjoy on the box at the moment. There’s the new series of Salvage Hunters on Quest, Wednesday evenings (catch-up here). Last episode saw Drew moved almost to tears by finding a lovely house still wallpapered in genuine William Morris paper as bright and beautiful as if it had been put up yesterday.
Then there was Restoring Britain’s Landmarks, about the invaluable work of the Landmark Trust who buy, restore and then rent out for holidays the most amazing historical properties. Seen that folly that’s a giant pineapple in the middle of a field? That belongs to the Landmark Trust. The show follows a number of their restoration projects, complete with looming deadlines and high-strung designers shouting at builders. It’s sort of like DIY SOS set in a parallel universe. As an on-screen tweet said at the end, this should be shown in schools to promote the idea that highly skilled crafts are an honourable and rewarding career choice.
Lastly, right after the new Made In Chelsea, a show called How To Live The Chelsea Lifestyle. I only watched it at first as there was NEO (nothing else on) but within 5 minutes I was hooked on this story of an agency letting out rooms in posh shared houses to the wanna-be posh. Each personally vetted by the owners. What starts as property porn quickly turns into a real-life The Office. You’ve not really experienced irony until you’ve seen the boss, Adam Goff, lead his team of two staff through a four hour seminar on time management. It’s priceless. I could have watched the whole four hours, to be honest. If you’ve ever lived in a shared house, or had a tit for a boss, then you’ll love this show. Watch it here. By the end of course the show has made plenty of serious points about a segregated housing system and the madness of London renting.
I watched this too and it was simply incredible. The bit where he says something about images being more powerful than words and the camera moves to the presentation slide with the picture of the sandtimer with the header “time the power of choice” was just beyond hilare… Was it just a one-off programme? I wish it was a series!
Oh I’d forgotten that bit! Wonderful wasn’t it. We’ve all been in meetings like that I’m sure. x
