Trend or travesty? Trunkular
When Ros posted about her new Glug vase obsession a while ago, it reminded me how fun it is to become a bit hung up on something. And do you know, finding things to want I just find I’m quite skilled at, so off I went and it happened in an antiques warehouse in back-of-beyond Perthshire. Readers, the thing is I think you’re going to be disgusted with this one. It’s pretty weird and not very beautiful. It’s… a trunk vase.
It’s an Irish Beleek tree trunk vase, if you know what that is – I didn’t. I just liked the weird yellow bits and could, nay can, picture it on my white shelf of white ceramic bits. But it was £20. I want to find it again for £3 at a car boot ideally.
Full of scorn for my wicked taste? Some pretty modern swanky shops and brands seem to be dead into trunks too. Like for instance, HAY.
And a maker called Jane Holmberg whose trunk vases I spotted in GoodHood yesterday.
Here’s how the artist herself is showing them on her website, all nice and literal like.
I’m calling it a trend, like it or not. But is anyone else into it??
I love these Beleek vases – thank you for putting a spotlight on them. I recently visited Newark Park and in the National Trust house was a bedroom with 54 ceramic swan vases – the past owner was a fellow devotee!
Ooh that sounds worth a visit, surely they wouldn’t miss one.
I’ve got a trunk vase, it’s purple of all colours! It’s smaller and straighter than yours. I bought it decades ago thinking it quirky. Funny thing is it doesn’t make the bouquet look like a tree, you just think oh there’s a vase trying to look like a tree trunk.
I have that exact Belleek vase. It does actually look like a tree when it has flowers in. Admittedly it does look like something slightly ‘Sleepy Hollow’ – ish when empty.
Ohh it look worthy to visit. Thank you for posting belleek vase i really love them to have.
