Trend: Highland hipsters
Last week it was my turn to run away to Scotland for a week to ignore technology and coalesce with the air, the lochs, the mountains and the trees. It started with three nights camping – glamping – by Loch Tay. Maybe one night too many for me, but only because the toilet cubicles were a good walk from our dome-tent thing and I developed some sort of toilet proximity anxiety that resulted in weird dreams. For two nights after this we stayed in a beautiful cottage in the Cairngorms *post coming soon* where my son threw up for one whole night in the really lovely, very close to my bed, bathroom. Swings and roundabouts innit.
Anyway, the highland hipster scene. We discovered it in Aberfeldy, a village close to Loch Tay, in the form of tweed and letterpress shop Haggarts. Haggarts is run by a bearded Irish man Ryan, whose dog is called Seamus Heaney, and who jovially told me he’s always had a beard and liked coffee and cycling so it’s annoying that that’s now on trend. Such is life for the fashion forward.
Haggarts was originally founded over 200 years ago by a James Haggart in another village on the south side of Loch Tay – he collected wool from local farms and spun it into yarn before weaving it into a material for clothes. Having gone through several owners in the Haggart family and otherwise since then, the brand was taken over by Ryan and his wife Deborah Hannigan in 2014. They’d already been worked with Haggarts for some years on their bespoke collection of bags, jackets, shirts etc that combine the tweeds with vintage materials, army surplus canvas and Ryan’s woodblock prints. You can also buy posters by Ryan, whose gorgeous printing press and typography bits are scattered throughout the shop.
Honestly, it was like Brooklyn in there. Later this week I’ll show you the interiors porn Cairngorms cottage we stayed in, which is owned by a tasteful Dane – the sixth biggest land owner in Scotland who’s thing is to buy areas of wilderness and preserve them. AKA nice bit of life envy coming soon…
