The old bamboo
Same old story. Went to the Londis to buy a paper, came back with this.
I returned home from the shop, and in a nod to Salvage Hunters, shouted for someone to come and admire what I’d just bought. I just couldn’t resist its strangeness. What love most about it that it’s clearly handmade. The loop that forms the back is nowhere near symmetrical and the slim lengths of bamboo are attached to the frame in quite an, erm, basic way. I told my mum about it and she said it sounded like one Grandma used to have, which had been made by the redoubtable and skilled Auntie Flo. So at a certain point in the last century making your own bamboo chair must have been a thing. Like Ikea-hacks are now.
The seat is so grubby I’m thinking I might have to learn upholstery so I can redo it myself. Cat didn’t agree – she spent a good ten minutes sniffing every inch of this chair. Must have been some kind of cat climbing frame in its previous home.
Yes, good find but not like Auntie Flo’s chair. That was woven in cane with back and seat all in one. Recovering the seat shouldn’t be too difficult, just deciding which fabric!
