The Garden Edit

My friend, a passionate and talented allotment-er, once asked me to buy her organic slug pellets for her birthday. And I was happy to oblige. Gifts for gardeners can be tough – you either have the intensely practical type, or the twee, rustic-twine-and-floral-wellies kind of gift.

The Garden Edit, however, offers a different vision of the gardener, one both urban and authentic. And who also has a genuine sense of style. This site is the creation of John Tebbs, a professional gardener working in London for over 15 years. There he goes now…

During a harsh winter full of downtime he was inspired to curate a collection of garden products that matched the visual style and quality of craftsmanship found in independent homeware boutiques.

The result is an online shop with a small but delightful selection of garden products, from the simple and affordable to the, let’s face it, eyewateringly expensive. £895 for an exquisite brass and cane Bauhaus watering can could buy you an awful lot of mushroom compost. But if you ever wanted to pull Bob Flowerdew this might be the gift to start with.

The selection is great though, and includes not just tools but art – these house plant illustrations by Alicia Galer would be wonderful to stare at while pricking out seedlings in the potting shed.* And I love the photography that accompanies the site, which manages to make the classic London garden – it must be Hackney, surely? – look both familiar and exotic.

* I’m not much of a gardener. Can you tell?
