Tea cup nerd out
Well we’re here, in the flat by the sea as we have been many times before. But this time we’re hopefully staying put. What, then, was the very first bit of cleaning and unpacking I did? Ladies and gentlemen, let me present my cabinet of family heirlooms, long envisaged, now an actual reality in my kitchen. Shall I talk you through it?
Shelving – a weird 80s steel and black vinyl thing I found in the junk shop for 20 quid. It ties in nicely with the rest of the black kitchen but is so much slimmer, lighter and better at attracting dust that a closed wall cupboard. On the shelves – Grandma’s precious green Woods Berylware teacups; fella’s mum’s maroon and black Polish Ćmielów espresso set from the 60s; iconic Black Velvet coffee set by John Russell, a gorgeous gift from sister-in-law; groovy Welsh goblets from my mum (will be toasting our new home in mead with these soon) and various random bits.
All of these items gifted to me were so appreciated, but sat in boxes for two years while people suspected I’d passed them on to a charity shop. Feels so brilliant to get them out and on display, providing all the decoration the kitchen needs. On the wall behind is a sample pot of Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster. When I’ve got round to painting it on all other surfaces I’ll do a full kitchen reveal.
Really love the look. An exciting time putting things together and making improvements. I’m looking forward to seeing your ideas take shape.
loving the shelf and what a bargain! i’ve got some that have been handed down to me too and don’t know what to do with them. liking this display – may copy !!! but the dust aspect bothers me as I fear my poor cleaning may then be on show….may have to find one with glass…
Really love this! I’ve always been frustrated by standard kitchen shelving units which are just too deep to make access to and display of nice cups etc. a pain – this works really well! Though Fiona’s issue with dusting would give me pause for thought too – I guess you’ll just need to use them all regularly to avoid the problem!
Thanks John – yes, I think I will start having tea out of a different cup each day on a strict rotation system!
