Swan vases: a collection is born

Hold on to your hats – I’ve just started a new collection. Admittedly it’s only a collection of one, as yet. But it’s going to be great. Want to meet it?

Yes, swan vases. Jill and I have been discussing collecting these babies for years. When we went shopping to Ardingly Antiques Fair we were both a bit afraid that it would descend into an unseemly scrap over a swan vase and we’d have to rename the blog, our friendship trampled into the dust. But we didn’t find any. I suspect the shortage might be to do with this…

The inspiration for my collection is The Flower Appreciation Society’s wonderful array of ceramic swans. Look at that. No wonder they’re so hard to come by. Mine was 99p in the Geranium charity shop in Lee Green. You should have seen the look of triumph on my face as I dropped my penny change into the collection tin and glided out of the shop on fast moving legs. More swans as I get ’em.

I love the swans ! I was going to buy a giant pink one in New York recently but I didn’t think I justify the shipping! I did however see the same one in grey, on top of a coffee table in Lounge Lover (bar in Shoreditch)

I’ve just bought myself a mottled green and black one for £3. It’s by a Canadian pottery famous for kitsch x

I went swan-hunting in Glasgow’s West End in recent times, but after making enquiries as to their scarcity was informed that the largest members of the waterfowl family had apparently flown off. Had unforeseen popularity rendered them absent from the shelves? It was thought the weather had caused a mass migration south.
