Street of shame

Recently we covered the launch of the UK’s first online-only interiors magazine, HeartHome. But years ago your two very lazy correspondents had an idea for their own online interiors magazine, but couldn’t be arsed to do much about it.

The other day while clearing out a box of stuff I found a folder with some of our early ideas in it, and I thought I’d share them. Our idea was a fanzine-style lo-fi aesthetic with features about real taste rather than good taste, and lots of lame jokes. Here is my concept for the classic up/down chart. Note the doctored World of Interiors stationery.

Other feature ideas in the file include a charity shop tip-off update, ‘Dives You Can Afford’ with the 10 cheapest properties in a given postcode, and something mysteriously called ‘Doll Ebay’. Here is a feature about a celebrity’s most prized possessions.

My Friend's House

Can you guess who I was claiming this random assortment belonged to? I will add before the reveal that it’s someone for whom I have a lot of respect, despite my rather unkind drawing.

Janet Street Porter

Yes! It’s Janet Street Porter. She’s never off that CB radio.

So what do you think? Is there still a gap in the market? Finding this box of old nonsense has entertained me so much, as I’d forgotten almost everything in it. Looks like a lot of work to me – thank goodness for blogging. Just for some final fun, here’s a list of our favourite ideas for a name:

You have your first correspondent lined up and waiting . . . it’s me if that wasn’t obvious. I’d like to volunteer to write the monthly ‘crusty old men who live in sheds and wee in their beds’ feature.

You’d be perfect for a barns and barnpots correspondent! As soon as our international backer comes through we’ll sign you up.

If we do we’ll get you in for the kid’s page. We were also thinking of doing interiors horoscopes

I think we had actually imagined making dolls of the celebrities profiled in the My Favourite Things feature, that we could then ebay afterwards. Like we are at all crafty. I still think all of our ideas are perfectly valid.
