Still in business

Berry Bros and Rudd | Shops still on British high street | My Friend's House

Booze food and hair upkeep. All things I could have told you lie in the hearts of Brits, before I looked at this nice little piece in the Express. It’s about the shops that have survived up to 300 years on the British high street and is, I guess, as revealing about our culture’s tastes as anything. Though honestly, I was a bit surprised by the inclusion of the rifle shop. Want to see some of the shops included in the piece? There’s one old chestnut that Ros covered on the blog before…

Manze’s! The pie and eel shop in South London, a place whose only change over time has been – according to the Express – an improvement in meat quality.

Britain’s oldest hairdressers and barber shop, Truefitt and Hill can still be found in Burlington arcade where it opened more than 200 years ago impressively.

And I’m sure you want to see what the rifle shop looked like – it has actually moved premises since opening in the 1880’s. There used to be a gun shop on my local high street when I moved here, and I can report it was like walking into a sitcom.*

See the full set of shops here and if you’re ‘regional’, you might want to take issue with the fact that it’s not really a reflection of Britain, as the article promises, so much as London. Often the way eh?

* I should point out that I went in out of curiosity, not for a gun.
