Stereotyping

Aren’t you tired of it? People  forever putting people in categories, writing off whole cultures or peoples based on a small group of extreme or, in the perceived view, badly behaved. This photo series by Iranian artist Nafise Motlaq depicting Iranian Fathers & Daughters seeks to defy some of the stereotyping she encountered as an Iranian while she was abroad. Nafise found subjects from different social and economic backgrounds in the country – religious and secular – and photographed all of them in their homes. She asked the daughters to provide some words about their fathers, which form the captions for each image.

“Putting these portraits together shows the reality of us; it shows how diverse we are,” she says.

“Our father has studied in Europe. That’s why he gave us all the freedom the Western youths have in personal life.”

“He is away five days a week at work. We usually spend time together on weekends and holidays.”

“He is a very funny man. He makes people laugh with his jokes and acts in family parties.”
