Soft and hairy
The Guardian today features the obituary of Scottish-born, Japan-based architect Kathryn Findlay. Her most recent work includes a collaboration with Anish Kapoor on the towering Olympic Park sculpture ArcelorMittal Orbit.
Her own work was more obviously organic, and influenced by the materials of her ex-husband and architectural partner Eisaku Ushida’s native Japan. This project may look like a semi-traditional Japanese interior, but it’s actually a loft apartment on the South Bank.
It is her ‘Soft and Hairy’ house, built for a private client in Tokyo, that is perhaps best known however. Inspired by a quote about the future of architecture by Salvador Dali, the home features a warren of rooms swathed in soft folds of fabric, the result of a design process that she described as like ‘a worm eating through an apple.’
For lots more examples of her work – the most fantastical of which, as is so common with bold architects, unbuilt – visit the Ushida Findlay Architects portfolio here.
