Snuggle up for a road trip
Oooo January is miserable isn’t it? I should be in Margate, cleaning the saw dust from every inch of my flat, painting the kitchen shelves and generally getting it ready to live in. But in these early days of January – and a January full of gloomy news at that – with a cold and aching bones, I’m currently staying close to the fire and a working TV instead. I thought you might be too. I went for coffee with a friend yesterday, who likes to ask before a night out, “Ros, what are you drinking?”. Yesterday however, her questions was, “Ros, what are you watching?” Here, for her edification and yours, is my answer.
I’m watching a lot of Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. Me and the fella have gone through phases of watching Bullseye, You’ve Been Framed and old Blankety Blank. I tell you, turning to your partner and saying “I think we’ve seen this episode of Blankety Blank already” feels very not great. Anyway, we also got an addiction to late-night reruns of Bargain Hunt and Flog It. Hosted by the divinely creepy Tim Wannacott, two teams get £300 to spend in antique shops, then compete to see what their finds raise at auction. Now tea time extravaganza Celebrity Antiques Road Trip adds celebs to the mix. And what celebrities. Perfect pairings so far include Johnny Walker & ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris, Oz Clarke & Jilly Goolden, and – yes! – Lesley Joseph & Christopher Biggins are scheduled in for Jan 20th. The one I’m advising you to catch-up with however is John Shuttleworth (the Bontempi playing suburban songsmith created by Graham Fellows) and Wayne Hemingway.
The whole episode is great, from them driving around Stroud in a coffee-coloured vintage motor to Shuttleworth performing Pigeons in Flight in the middle of a field. But it’s Hemingway’s panache and flair for buying old stuff out of sheds that’s the real delight. You can’t keep a good vintage entrepreneur down, it seems. I won’t ruin the tense finish… but it’s all happening in the auction rooms at the end. My suggestion would be to pour yourself a Cup-a-soup, wrap up in a Slanket, and check out the full episode – it’s a whole hour! – here.
