Round Britain squiz
It’s always great when you stagger into a new blog or website that you realize is going to keep you occupied for hours. And this one is too fascinating not to share. It’s I Like, a travelogue by Glaswegian, Annie, documenting her trips across the UK to visit obscure museums, faded seaside towns, classic cafes and the like. She’s got a great eye, especially for the little details. Drink in the signage nectar on offer.
Bravo Mrs Humphrey. And below, note the pre-feminist street sign named after Ralph’s wife.
One for My (Scottish) Friend – she might have even put it there as a wee bairn.
The entrance to Stirling Boys’ Club reads ‘QUARRELLING IS TABOO’. Quite right. And lastly, below, this sign caught my eye. Boxall is the maiden name of my own Grandma, so I couldn’t help but wonder if it was a relative. It’s one of a series of hand-painted signs in Postman’s Park, London, commemorating people who lost their lives trying to save others.
I cannot recommend Annie’s site enough – get over there if you’re interested in disused swimming pools, stick-of-rock shops, the Tunnocks Teacakes factory or radar museums. And check out her postcards for sale while you’re at it.
My Grandma’s maiden name was Boxall too. What a sad memorial that plaque is. I do hope Elizabeth Boxall didn’t die in vain. It doesn’t say if the child survived.
