Real reveal: Upholstered armchairs

Honestly, doing this blog has continued to challenge the aspect of my character that was previously given to making bold statements about ideas I’d never actually follow through. Today’s overcoming of this is an unveiling of…

My two old Grandma chairs freshly reupholstered in green linen! One has pink piping and the other has orange piping. How interior designy is that? I think I’ve been talking about doing this particular job since we started this blog in 2009 – probably even before then – so you know, it’s taken a while. And I tell you, the green linen hunt was quite protracted. But who cares, it happened. You can see the before pictures here – scroll down – and read about the obsession with Villa Necchi that inspired the colour.

Yup it’s very green in that room now, but I’m happy. I’m so happy I moved the chairs into a lighter room to do some show-off close ups.

Upholstery ideas | My Friend's House  I can see how it might get addictive buying old furniture to reupholster and sell on. I’m not selling these puppies, but I’m just saying.

The green linen was from Dominique Picquier in the end and after receiving a nice sample from them in the post I ended up buying the fabric while in Paris. That was weirdly exciting, especially since the transaction was made between the non-English speaking sales lady and non-French speaking moi – hey, I knew ‘vert’. The pink piping is by Romo I think and the orange is from The Hackney Draper and basically altogether the end result has got me over that particular colour-combo obsession.

Oh yeh, and remember I mentioned I had a new colour fancy in the shape of aubergine and orange? It came from this.

They look gorgeous. & I am getting serious ‘cornice envy’ looking at the first photo.

I should warn you about the green thing though – I have quite a green sitting room. I then bought a couple of green pots for the mantlepiece. Then it became a ‘I collect green pottery’ thing. Now the mantlepiece isn’t big enough…..

I know this story too well. It’s happened in various ways around this house. Think we got very lucky with the cornices.

Beautiful, gorgeous, lovely green with non-matchy piping- brilliant! And I love them with the dark floors and green curtains, walls etc, as I am slightly obsessed with green.

Very chic indeed. Any tips on the upholstering side of things? Was it a diy job?

Hi Johanna, no I’m afraid I just took it to a local lady. But I do have a friend who does her own if you’re ok with a sewing machine? And also, there are courses you can take in it if you’re super keen.
