Raf Simons’ expensive ceramics sale
Doesn’t Raf Simons look dapper under a Serge Mouille lamp in this Vogue shoot?
News that he’s auctioning off his 99-piece collection of mid century French ceramics on the 17 Dec, prompted a sudden desire to get behind the man, as it were. First, here’s an image of some of the pieces he’ll be selling. In total, they’re expected to fetch $400,000.
Belgian Raf started out as a furniture designer before becoming an intern in Paris for designer Walter Van Beirendonck. According to the auction house he has always collected, and used to sell ceramics to fund his intern years (he might identify with this).
Wanna see his house? Here he is chillaxing in sandals on his balcony. Next to a photo of an ambiguous marble intervention under the stairs.
It’s not clear what that is, so lets press on to the bedroom and bathroom for a jazzy headboard and a more understandable use of marble.
Finaly, the second living room – every good house should have one – and evidence that the ceramics collection once held pride of place on the shelves.
Nice an’ that, but isn’t it hard to want something when you know someone wants shot of it?
Open stairs with pointy marble thing underneath – can only be a device to stop people bringing small children round to his house
Oh my word you’re right, it’s the only explanation.
The 5 ceramic pieces you show are Chambois (spelling?), a very popular 1950s French thrower, highlighted in Studenmaier’s (sp?) book. Where and when is the auction, and what is the auction house? I’m sure he has a great collection judging from the pieces selected in your article.
Hi Gilman, the auction is happening at Piasa Rive Gauche auction house in Paris (http://www.piasa.fr) on the 17 Dec. And you are right, have just found that they are by Pol Chambost. I haven’t found out where the proceeds are going to yet.
