Proud at last

So this weekend was Margate Pride and I had a lovely time. Last year’s Pride was pretty sad – leaflets went out to homes beforehand from someone warning against the town turning into “Margay” (sounds like a dream to me). In the end there was a paltry procession and the main acts got cancelled because of a last-minute lack of funds. This year however was a full-on celebration. I even made these flower hats for me and my pals. Obvs I made mine the biggest.

I bought armfuls of fake flowers from Poundland and bias-bindinged them onto cheap headbands. I doubt they would meet EU health-and-safety legislation but they held together pretty well and we got lots of compliments. The little yellow one in the top row was made for my friend’s young son.

Margate pride

The picture above shows most of Margate’s architectural icons with the party in the foreground. I’m even in it, Where’s Wally-style. It was taken by local photographer Joel Knight and you can see the full set of his wonderful images that really show the inclusivity of the day here. The success of this year was largely down to the motivation and organisational enthusiasm of the Sink The Pink crowd – their move to Margate has helped usher in a more tolerant vibe and an outpouring of creative spirit. Yass Mamma, here’s to many more.

That’s an impressive party! You’ll be having the equivalent of an Edinburgh festival next!

PS Meant to say that the hats are very artistic indeed.
