Pride against prejudice
Where can you see Peter Tatchell, Vic Reeves and Tracy Emin in one weekend? I hardly need to spell out the answer… This weekend was Margate’s Gay Pride, an event that made the papers because of some homemade pre-publicity from one man with a photocopier and a seriously not-on attitude. His leaflets asked residents not to let Margate become MarGAY, so the local LGTB crowd quickly got their own print on in reply, and MarGAY t-shirts were being worn with pride. Here’s the small but beautiful parade from my window. And when I opened the front door the mighty Peter Tatchell was walking by – mega-phone in hand, naturally. He’s been beaten up in Russia – he ain’t afraid a’no leaflet.
Next day was the Art Car Boot Fair, a London event taking a trip to the seaside. Well known artists get together to sell prints, experiments and studio detritus from the back of their cars, plus there are interactive events and performances. It’s a great event, and absolutely packed – a bit of a challenge for my post-Pride hangover. Check out the video for a taste of the vibe – including a hilarious bit of Tracy Emin yelling ‘This is Tracy Emin. You’ve won the raffle’ into her phone.
Local artists’ spaces like Resort Studio, Crate and Limbo also took part, and it was a lovely end to a weekend, perfect for reclaiming Margate from the UKIP crowd. The town is buzzing, and I’ll be back with a short report on a lovely new shop – and my lovely new windows – later in the week.
