Polish paper craft
A moving-in card arrived from my friend in Poland, a card which she claimed had been ‘made by a Polish granny.’ What else could your roving reporter do but investigate?
And when I say investigate, I mean it. I think I read someone’s phd on the subject. It’s wycinanki, Polish paper cutting, and also part of house decorating traditions going back, ooh, ages. The one above is specific to the Lowicz Region, with birds and flowers made up of layers of coloured paper. Wanna make one? Get instructions here.
yumski!
The Horniman Museum in Forest Hill had a lovely exhib of Polish papercuts last year, wish there was someone importing these to the UK, I would totally buy them.
If I ever make it over to visit Polish-friend I’ll remember to take a big empty suitcase. I’ll shout you!
