Paint talk part…a high number

Can of worms isn’t it? You start going over things, you want to keep going. Everywhere you go there’s a new alluring colour combination that needs to be found room for.

The kitchen was fine as it was. The windows were replaced though owing to security-threatening rot of the old ones, leaving behind bits of walls needing fixed. And so, a new paint job beckoning anyway, here’s how things look today.

That F&B blue/black  blotch on the units is the blotch of certainty. It’s a confident one-hit show of sureness. The rest is someone dabbling with things they’re never going to do. Lilac, which I was writing about at the time and have always thought looked good with yellow, but felt chilly in this room. Then some leftover pink from the bathroom. End result is a crazy-inducing view from the kitchen table.

I’m now wondering whether to stick the unit colour – which looks more navy blue in that room by the way – on the walls around it too. Like this kitchen inside the latest Elle Deco, which just gave the idea more weight…

What do you think? Just stick with white?

Never stick with just white. Love the idea of dark units and dark walls although that pink would make a great neutral with the dark cupboards too.

Thanks Kate! It helps to have these nuggets. I’m erring to dark just now, but think it’s cos I’ve just done pink in the bathroom. I could repaint all year if it wasn’t so bankrupting and disrupting.

Now there’s an idea, paint you could change at the flick of a switch!

The black is very moody, but I wonder how sexy it would look amidst the chaos that is our kitchen? I’m sure you would be more adept at keeping up that stylish minimalism or maximalism that it needs to look really really good, so be bold and brave and go for it!
I’m sticking to my white to go with my crapimalism! (I think that sums up my kitchen?!)

I love the black and think it will make the yellow tiles stand out & good great with the glimpse of stainless steel counter I can see. Also its not the whole room just that wall isn’t it?

Go dark go dark, it’ll look brilliant with the tiles. We painted the external window frames of our house dulux gallant grey and one of the external walls a slightly darker grey and i couldn’t be happier with it.

I’d agree with the don’t go white lobby. If it was just that one piece of wall, the dark looks great. Love the colour of dark blue on the units. Would the other walls in the kitchen be white or would you go for a lighter tone, a grey perhaps?

Thanks everyone, this is helpful. It would just be that one piece of wall ‘the working bit of kitchen’ as it were. Think I’m going to go for it.

Does your F and B Blue / Black ever look green. You inspired me and have tempted me into the dark side and am painting a shelf and first coat definitely looks green ?

Hi Helen, when wet it looks very teal-coloured, which is a bit greenish I guess. Now it’s definitely looking more black than anything else.

How about the splash back in the black one ? I did one kitchen, last month in Essex, and did tiling similar to the first one. It would be very nice if you have look and tell us what you think.

I think black will go great with the tiles! Although I’m a bit scared of using dark tones, I’m starting to think one accent dark wall will look nice in my kitchen. The pink is nice, it looks warm, but I think you should go for the black!
