Our first office
Jill and I have got an office. We’ve got desks together for the first time in 12 years. Let’s see who finds whom most annoying (clue: experience tells me Jill will tire of me first). There is literally nothing there yet, otherwise I’d show you a picture. We don’t even have a bin. But I will show you a picture of the first office I ever fell in love with instead.
It’s from Arthur Ransome’s kids-turn-detective story The Big Six. It had lots to obsess over as a child: kids allowed to sail boats on their own. Kids being framed and having to clear their name. And best of all, kids getting to set up an office of their own to conduct operations from.
What I learnt, early on, from this little picture is that all you need for an office is a room of your own, a map to pin on the wall, a big table, and a sign. They put up a sign naming their office ‘Scotland Yard.’ Jill, what shall we call ours?

Trend or travesty? Blocks and borders
One of my holiday snaps of a building in Sardinia. Smile! But how bang on trend is that wall? Perfectly summing up how to do asymmetric paint blocking. In interiors, it’s happening with border lines – a little bit De Stijl, a little bit Memphis. Here’s the kind of thing I mean. I’d never have […]
Trend: Deep Blue
Nerds and readers of a certain age will of course assume that I’m talking about the IMB computer that made history by beating Garry Kasparov at chess. But no, it’s another Deep Blue that’s yanking my chain. In a good way… I didn’t think dark colours were my kind of thing, but dark dark blues […]
Paul Vanstone
Gosh I love Lambs Conduit street. I spent an enjoyable hour there with a hangover the other week, dotting between the Gents clothing shops, Darkroom and Folk. Folk is best known for its understated clothes – and in my opinion, is great for shoes – but have a nip around the shop if you’re looking […]
