All the fun of the fête
16 courses, 48 hours, 50 guests and lots of pétanque. I’m just back from a weekend visiting my Mum and Dad. They have a house in the beautiful southern French village of Combeliaubert, and the first weekend of August is the village fête.
The village is a dozen or so houses, with a phone box (not sure it’s still connected) and a boulodrome, the pitch for the daily game of pétanque.
It was my second visit to the fête, and I felt so privileged to be invited. With villagers and guests there are usually around 50 people, with everyone gathering in the garage of Eugène, the unofficial mayor of Combeliaubert, for lunch and dinner on the Saturday and Sunday.
Aside from the wonderful food, there was singing, dancing, Rock Around the Clock played on a mandolin and shooting stars before bedtime.

Dorset: new design hot spot?
Sorry, am I becoming a wood bore? Look at the first collection from new Dorset company Another Country. It’s friday, I won’t drone on, but the company blurb talks of craft, solid wood, Scandinavian and Japanese woodwork, and flat pack. To generalise, many of those descriptions translate as ‘nice’. Well, one says ‘practical’. Anyway, one […]
Wisdom of moths
Great news! Is it the gorgeous leaf shape, the divine pale minty colour, or the soft bronze accents? Who knows, but last night Mother Nature sent a minion to endorse my new wallpaper. Yes, I’m a regular Bill Oddie. The beautiful moth later came and sat on my arm for ages, but the picture of that […]
Hue knew?
…that this really, really good paint shop has been lurking on my own high street for a few months? The rover in me has clearly been taking a big holiday. Colour Makes People Happy is the front for Siecle, a Dutch brand of paints by Dofine that’s been around London for a while with its lovely […]
