Hobbit houses

I had a day off today, and finally got around to doing a bit of local snooping that’s been on my to-do list for ages. My bus passes this side street off Lewisham Way every day, and I’ve always been curious about this little terrace of what look like backwards houses.

Rokeby Road troll houses

Rokeby Road houses

A bit of internet searching found this discussion, with the last word going to a current resident of the ‘Troll Houses’.

“I’m glad other people appreciate the Troll houses as we call them. I live in one of them and was trying to find more info. All i know is: built mid 30s, each unit has a ground floor 2 bed and a first floor 2 bed flat. they are pretty badly built, rough brick, rendered / pebble-dashed, internal layout is really nice with good sized rooms.”

On my way back, past some much larger, posher houses on Lewisham Way itself, I felt I just had to take a snap of this fella.

A roving garden bore

And, the journey to becoming my Mother is complete as I find myself caring as much about my garden as my house, carry a notebook for taking down the names of plants I discover and bore my partner rigid with talk of ‘look at the agapanthus!’ when we’re in the car, on the train, on […]

Calm down dear

I hate the Keep Calm thing. It evokes for me the most annoying, smug kind of British nostalgia. The posters were, in fact, the subject of our first ever post here at MFH. But I’m still enjoying the current copyright row. Mark Coop, owner of Keep Calm And Carry On Ltd, has registered the slogan […]

Junk in the trunk

Oh how I fantasize about making my living by buying charming old tat and selling it on, either at a market or in my imaginary shop. Well I’ve just got addicted to a blog by a girl who’s living the dream. Jo Waterhouse lives on a narrow-boat in East London and runs a market stall […]
