Not yachty
Ever since working on the ‘Nautical Issue’ at one of the larger interiors mags, I’ve kind of had it with sail boats and beach huts and other seaside-themed whimsey. Keep your rope doorstops, have your sailcloth cushions, shove your driftwood sculpture. Thanks. But here is a sea-theme I can really get into, from the consistently brilliant Mini Moderns.
Named ‘Whitby’, the wallpaper is inspired by designers Keith Stephenson and Mark Hampshire’s roots in the area. “When we think of the seaside, it’s not beach huts and yachts, but the vibrancy of a working fishing harbour that comes to mind,” says Mark on the website.
I love that the colourway above was inspired by faded fishermen’s smocks, and the one at the top is called ‘Lido’. It reminds me of one of my all time favourite unattainable wallpapers, the Hoku Sea Curl print by Kuboaa. They used to make it as a bespoke order only, and now they don’t seem to make it at all (maybe if one asked really nicely…). But I loved the wave pattern, and the bright blue colourway looks so zingy and modern. And in no way twee.
I really like the Whitby wallpaper. I could almost smell the cod, but maybe having a whole wall of it would be too much (not being a very good sailor). A framed sample on a white wall would be lovely. Driftwood frame of course!
Thanks so much for your comments. Yes we are tweed out with beach huts and are glad you see that while we can’t ignore trends we can always give them a mini moderns spin 🙂
Best wishes

Thanks Keith. As two confirmed wallpaper freaks we love Mini Moderns. You’ve even lent My Friend’s nursery a certain something.
