Needlepoint newsflash
Every good blog has one…Do you know about Fine Cell Work? It’s a social enterprise that trains prisoners in skilled and paid needlepoint work, often commissioned by interior designers. The organisation first came to my attention when I saw some of their Tattoo cushions in Tom Dixon’s shop, but I think you can also buy the sewing kits in Liberty if you like to make your own.
The organisation was set up by a Lady – Lady Anne Tree – who used to visit Holloway prison in the 60’s and started working with a few prisoners on needlepoint carpets that she then sold as collector’s items. She was motivated to found a more official conduit for training prisoners and after lobbying the Home Office for decades she managed to change the law so that prisoners could earn money from it too.
Lets see another cushion and skip to the point of today’s post…
…there’s a showroom sale happening at the end of the month at 38 Buckingham Palace Road (details here) so if you want to jump on the tapestry trend, now’s the time to do it.
Side note: do you think there’s any money to be made from being a hand model?
Great, and so much more artistic and interesting than sewing mail bags. I think there is money in being a hand model, as long as you don’t have your hands tattooed!
There’s bound to be a niche market for that. My hands were given the once over in the office earlier and deemed not model worthy so have had to shelf the idea.
