My desk: Margarita Lorenzo
Handmade homewares and accessories designer Margarita Lorenzo of Chocolate Creative takes us on a tour of her desk.
Where is your desk from? I made it myself from an old Ikea desk. It’s my printing table and it doubles up as desk for when I’m designing new collections. It also serves as Missi, my cat’s bed. I have a few desks, but this is my favorite.
Where is your desk ? This is in my studio at home. I’m hoping to move into a bigger and more proper work space soon – so as to accommodate stock, material and screens etc as the business grows. Plus, I fancy sharing a creative space with my designer friends.
Do you keep pictures/objects around you for inspiration and reference? I have too many to say, you just have to look at these photos. But yes, I think it’s essential for my work and being surrounded by the things I like and inspire me is what my home/studio is all about. My favorite things are from interiors magazines and books, vintage paper goods, postcards, prints, graphic posters, vintage fabrics, furniture…
Do you have favourite stationery that you like to keep handy? I do have a problem with note/sketch books. I must have more than 10 spread around me, and sometimes I don’t remember where I wrote a specific note or idea. They sit by my desks, shelves, hand bag, bed side table, living room…I can not resist buying them. I love simple stationary, in neutral colors with a vintage look and typogarphy.
Have you found a good chair? Yes, I have found the one, but it is still in the shop! I haven’t been able to afford it yet. It is a Lobby ES by Vitra. I sit in a crap old one just now, which is about to die on me anytime soon.
Do you have a view from your desk? Yes, the garden, the Peckham sky and my neighbours’ houses – some nicer than others. I love when it’s a sunny day and it stays light until late in the evening, that’s when I work the most and feel more motivated.
A favourite mug? Yes yes, one of my own designs – the Mirror mug, from my new range of bone china mugs.
Do you keep your workspace tidy? Yes, when printing I hardly make a mess. I need to be very well organised and tidy so I don’t go too mad working in a small space. But, sometimes it is nice to spread things around. You should have seen the studio/house before Xmas, it is was a total mess!
What are you working on at the moment? I’m designing wallpaper, a new design for the Messages collection, and I’m reworking the Decayed Glamour collection in different colors and designs. I’m always evolving my brand and try to keep the stock fresh by adding new products all the time, so that the collections are small and more exclusive. My brain keeps creating all the time, which is the most fun part of the whole business!
Nice post!! Thanks for having over at your desk series, I am off to tweet about it!
