Menz (Dadz) magazine

Before I introduce my newest magazine discovery, Kindling Quarterly – created in Brooklyn, aimed at trendy Dads – I feel I should flag up that I can’t think of a single man in my life, past or present, who might buy it. Sure, that says more about the number of sensitive magazine-reading men* I know than relevance of title to market. But, I can’t even see Mr My Friend’s House buying it, and he’s proper warm and sophisticated.

So, bearing in mind that all thoughts on it stem from this position, I’ve been wondering this: Could it be that this Dad’s mag is going to be bought, primarily, by partners of Dads who want them to be men who read magazines about how nice it is to be a Dad? How cynical am I? Before you answer that, I urge you to have a look at Rohan Anderson of Austalia’s bedroom, then read what Ros once wrote about that kind of thing here.

Thing is, I do really like what Kindling Quarterly stands for: ‘Through essays, editorials, art and photography we highlight creative individuals whose work and lives are inseparable from their role as a parent…we aim to present a thoughtful dialogue about fatherhood that is missing from our cultural landscape.’ True that. Maybe I like it especially because I’m a Mum who is the primary care giver in this house. Also, it’s probably because it looks nice.

So anyway, I’m thinking of getting the Dad of my children a subscription for his birthday.

*I once went out with a man who would fling the saturday newspaper supps at me and yell ‘Bird’s bit’ while he riffled through the sports pages. Sometimes, I don’t miss my twenties.

Your final comment made me chuckle so much! The problem is, on a weekend, the supplements are the only bits I read of a newspaper. Cliché schmliché!!

p.s. wholeheartedly agree this is mag is for partners of hipster (or not so) dads
