May Day

Yes it’s change-over day at Downing Street, with the old incumbents running round stuffing the very last of their belongings, including that little pile of small change and the coat hangers from the dry-cleaners, into bin bags while the new folks wait impatiently outside. Here is what the scene looked like when they moved in all those years ago – nice to see Sam Cam is as addicted to stacks of pound-shop plastic bowls and buckets as the rest of us. Bet they don’t have that cheap pine bedside table anymore…

Camerons moving house

We reported at the time, of course, on the new kitchen that the Camerons put in to 11 Downing Street (the larger of the two Downing Street properties, which they lived in with their children. Presumably George Osborn’s clan just curled up in rolls of wallpaper in the smaller gaff next door.) Rumour has it that the lovely Roundhouse kitchen Sam installed (below) is the reason that our new Prime Minister Teresa May will also be living in Number 11. She’s always rather liked it, apparently. Maybe that was her main motivation for going for the Premiership all along…

Glad Mrs Gove didn’t get her hands on it, after the horrible things she said about Justine Milliband’s kitchen. And though the Downing Street cat might be staying put, I’m certain the gorgeous mustard sofa will be in the back of a van already. For a taste of what might go in its place we present a recentish photo of Teresa May’s sofa at her Berkshire home.

Faded red loose covers and some mismatched cushions. Much more middle-England. Up yours Metropolitan Elite and your Sofa Workshop Fancy Nancy (literally) sofas. Home Counties style is the new norm. Sigh.

*If you want to move out of your home at short notice then why not try the removals firm favoured by the Camerons, moving them both in and out of Downing Street. Here’s their number:

I think there’s a book in it isn’t there? ‘Political Interiors in a Brexit Era’ and clearly you are the guys to do it – quick before someone else does.
