Marimekko and Eric Leaper
It’s sunny, but a storm is coming, I believe. To prepare, I was watching this film about Marimekko’s Weather Diary range, inspired by Norwegian weather patterns.
I love the plates, and their soaked, blurred pools of colour.
They remind me of my lovely Leaper plate, another possesion of my mum’s, which I’ve been lucky enough to get my sticky mitts on.
Eric Leaper worked in Newlyn at the same time as Bernard Leach was working in St Ives. According to this little biography, he was as popular locally for throwing parties as for throwing pots. His vibrant designs bleed colour, and many were produced using ‘dangerous chemicals’. I’ve just googled mine and found a very similar one labelled ‘Eric Leaper Plate With Uranium Finish.’ Hmm? Is that dangerous? Answers on a suspiciously glowing postcard…
THOSE PLATES ARE BEAUTIFUL. Caps necessary for shouting effect.
THANKS! WE AGREE. Love that you’ve been moved to blog-hollering by them. x
The Eric Leaper looks lovely on your mantelpiece, but if you’re worried about the radiation, you could always give it back. The Marimekko plates are very nice too. Remind me of Cornish weather.
Ha ha! No chance…
