Intriguing chair-making event at LDF 2014
There are thousands of emails coming in about the next London Design Festival, which starts on the 13th September. Ros and I are nearly booking holidays while it’s on just to avoid trying to whittle down the events that we’d like to visit. Anyway, this live installation at the V&A involving Ella Doran making a chair has sparked my interest – not least because I met the designer earlier in the year at another trade fair and she was really lovely.
The designer will be working alongside Galapagos Designs, a vintage / upcycling furniture brand that she has collaborated with before (on the chair below) and The Great Recovery Project (which aims to promote sustainable manufacturing practices), to deconstruct vintage chairs, then reconstruct them again – refurbishing and upholstering them live. This is to highlight what The Great Recovery Project calls a circular making process, with regards to the waste element of making. The finished chairs will then be on show for the rest of the design festival.
Hats off to the team, I’d hate to have a crowd of people watch me work my magic at a computer screen (that is what I do).
