Hipster’s tip sheet: Junk shop edition
Year’s ago Jill and I idly discussed doing an online magazine, and one of the suggested features was a Charity shop tip sheet, letting you know which local chazzers were good for various types of junk. Today I’m updating the idea with a selection of finds – as I type still available – at the wonderful Aladdin’s Cave, Lewisham. Apologies to non-London-dwelling readers.
First up, two gramophones. Record sales are up again, I read. They’re the future. The one above is even portable – ideal for beach parties.
This one – although too retro for my taste – has a perfect His Master’s Voice badge on the front.
Where’s E13? It sounds pretty hip to me. And behind it is a wonderful wooden roller-fronted shop unit.
Love these vintage bamboo side tables. If I hadn’t thought I’d be derided as a junk hoarding loon when I got home I would have had these myself. Perfect for that high-glam 70s bedroom scheme you’ve been putting together.
While you’re at it you could put this beauty at the bottom of the bed and lounge around in that silk kimono, waiting for Warren Beatty to call.
Still watching Netflix on your laptop? Please. In east London these days it’s all about having only 4 channels and a vintage TV in a cabinet.
Those are my choices, but as discussed here, Aladdin’s Cave is quite possibly the world’s best shop. If you pick any of these gems up, be sure to let us know!
They bamboo tables are classic ‘cane furniture’. I used to fabricate loads of them together – suppose I should have kept them! 🙂
