Get the look: Jimi Hendrix
News that £1.2m lottery money is going on restoring Jimi Hendrix’s old flat at London’s 23 Brook Street led to two events here. First a search for photos of the place as it was back then – more on that in a bit – and second, an epiphany that the future has surely got to be teal velvet suits.
Totally Gucci A/W 1995, I want one. To be honest it’s not 100% clear that this photo, depicting a rather fashion-forward approach to interior decoration, was taken in the Brook Street home. It is credited as ‘Jimi at home’ and he rented a couple of other London flats before moving there with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham. Also, some shots of Brook Street that are credited follow a very different look. Like tasselled, beaded, hippy different.
The flat is famously next door to Handel’s old house and was previously used as office space for the Handel House Museum (see just how ‘office’ it looked here). To whet the appetite for how it might look post retro makeover, how about a little get the look based on this final photo?
In four quick steps:
1.Vintage Dansette from ebay.
2. Inlaid Victorian sofa from The Old Cinema.
3. 60’s Danish lamp from Forest London.
4. Lenny Bruce (and Bob Dylan) record(s) from ebay or your local vinyl supplier.
May we politely suggest that, like Hendrix, you save the beaded stuff for the boudoir.
The suit & the bedspread appear to be of the same material. Do you think he did something of a Scarlett O’Hara & ‘ran them up’ especially for the occasion?
Well that’s definitely the story I believe now.
The first and third pic here were actually taken at 34 Montagu Square – the appartment that Jimi and his manager Chas Chandler rented from Ringo Starr. We go there on my London Beatles Walk
Thanks for clearing that up Richard, I thought the first one was definitely a different flat, but hadn’t realised the third one was too.
