Gents on film

What is it that makes the Gents tick when it comes to their personal habitats? Let’s take a look at a few manly rooms from the movies to find out. Here’s my top five most memorable, starting with number 5:

Brrrrrrr, monochrome with a double dose of the Barcelona chair dismembered from footstool. No amount of statement art can cheer you up from bare glass shelves and an empty coffee table. And just why is the tv so low down? An investment banker-cum-serial killer lives here, like you had to ask.

At number 4:

Ahhhh the DC flat-share of nerdy journo Kevin Dolenz and obsessed-with-Dale-Biberman Kirby ‘Kirbo’ Keager. Woody Allen posters, painted brick walls, a Mickey Mouse lamp and a skull are supposed to say ‘fresh out of university’. In reality that flat is tons better than anything you or I had as students. But, not good enough that Kev could tempt Leslie away from a giant vintage Nike poster.

At number 3:

Gent decor at its best courtesy of The Lives Of Others. Parquet floors, monogrammed bedlinen, a sparse bedside table and nice specs = too cool for communism.

At number 2:

Which Gents’ Rooms From Movies list would be complete without Ferris Bueller’s bedroom? Two thoughts. 1. Is overlapping posters as wallpaper back yet? 2. I don’t approve of flags.

At number 1:

As soon as Johnny apologises to Baby for his room, you start to admire the way he has two rugs and notice that that is actually quite a cool chair.

Which masculine movie rooms stick in your mind?

George (Colin Firth)’s house in A Single Man. Every last inch of it is perfect mid-century gorgeousness! But then I wouldn’t expect anything less from Tom Ford…

Yes Rebecca! It was very nearly on the list, but The Lives Of Others (despite lack of good pics) nudged it off the Really Lovely One spot.

After watching the Lives of Others all I could think was that’s the coolest console table ever. Can’t find it in the movie now. Did I really imagine it? Mr Rush’s room in The King’s Speech is another goodie.

Al, I felt the same way about his desk after first watch, then went looking for pics of it and wondered if I was confusing it with his piano. 10 out of 10 to the set designers anyway.
