From the woods
A while ago my friend Meg, the photographer, told me she’d just come back from photographing a man who lived in the woods. I’ve finally got around to investigating further, and it turns out she wasn’t on the trail of the Sasquatch, but photographing the wonderful work of sculptor, artist and wood-worker Joel Parkes. Dorest-based Joel has created a range of carved wooden vessels, each handcrafted from a single piece of wood, from trunks too large to fit through any conventional processing machine.
The bowls – each one unique – are a lovely thing to create from 200 year old wood which would otherwise be unusable. Joel is about to show the collection – called Zero – at East London’s Mother London, along with a film about his process. The exhibition runs from Thursday 19th February until 26th February 2015. You can find out more about Zero, as well as the fascinating route which brought Joel here, on his website, as well as buy the bowls. And for a peak inside his home and studio, check out Meg’s images from her trip on her own blog, here.
