From the car boot
Just in from Battersea Car Boot. It sells itself as a better class of Boot, and you don’t have to get there till midday, but it’s still totally mental. Anyway, I took a few minutes out from stopping people crawling into my car and, to my surprise, bought something. This painted pin-up.
What do you think? Cool or a bit naff? Both, hopefully. I like the colours, which in real life are better than this shot. And also it reminds me of another phone picture that once graced my flat.
At college my flatmate had choreographed a piece set in an 80s bedroom, and the props were brought home. It was a year of Jennifer Rush’s The Power of Love played endlessly, and this Syd Brak Athena poster – Long Distance Kiss – propped up next to the phone in the hall. I started out hating both, but warmed to them. Go on, play Jennifer Rush now, here, and have a stare at the poster. It’s good.
COVET. It’s the chic version of the nudes on the back of old Tennents Lager cans!
Hmmm, I am aware my admission not only shows my age but also my [lack of] social standing and yet I proudly stand by it. STILL COVET.
Not entirely sure re the pin-up poster but I have loved hearing The Power of Love again after so long…. now tempted to buy a CD of Jennifer Rush. I remember Athena so well and bought my first painting on a block from there, a Utrillo, in the seventies.
She is spectacular. I love her make up and the way she’s so artfully dressed. For a phone call. A very excellent buy. Do you think the Battersea Boot Fair is good for sellers, too? I have just got a whole load of boot fodder into piles, ready to go to the right sale in south London, but never done one before or been to a local one either to shop so any knowledge gratefully accepted…
Love it! She is in a very tasteful state of deshabille; I would have bought her. Good find!
I think it is beautiful.
I had exactly the same postcard of Long Distance Kiss many many years ago – thanks for the memories! I feel 16 again!!
