Fireplace feedback

Open fire

Photographer: Stephen Simpson

Thanks to all the readers who commented with helpful advice about open fires after yesterday’s post. I honestly thought everyone would say, yes, great, go for it, but your reports of fire hassle have given me pause. I rented a house with an open fire a few years ago, and I loved it. All the faff of clearing out the old ash and building a fresh fire I really enjoyed, so I’m not worried about that. And what’s a bit more dust? But the amount of work is off-putting, and the idea of having to redecorate the whole room is just too much. This weekend I’m buying a big rug and a thermal vest instead. Real Reveal next week. Thanks everyone!

Being of an older generation, i didn’t like to wade in yesterday… but we installed an electric fire which gives the impression of a warm glowing coal fire and looks fine inset with the hearth and surround, and gives the most wonderful instant heat on really cold days. It’s clean and easy and I wouldn’t go back to the hassle of a real fire or even the coal and gas ones with the immitation coals which get horribly dusty! tpause meantime until you’ve explored all the options. Opening the space is a good idea and with your artistic flair I’m sure you’ll come up with an ideal paper or paint to show it off.
Dare I ask how the garden clearing is going?
