Dreaming of lidos
In three weeks time I’ll be meeting my second born, so its exciting times here. But, I only tell you this so that I can briefly moan about the heat in London yesterday and its effects on my ankles, and to explain why I am now pouring over pictures of the UK’s best – and remaining – lidos. This first one is the oldest heated swimming pool in Scotland, the salt water lido at Gourock, which opened in 1909.
I’ve only ever driven past it and understand that it’s just undergone – or is still undergoing, the web is full of conflicting dates – a £2 million refurb. Fantastic news in light of all the amazing Art Deco lidos that have been shut down in this country. Though apparently there are 100 or so left. This is the subject of Janet Smith’s book Liquid Assets, a kind of history of Britain’s open air swimming pools with a nice foreword by swimming fan Tracey Emin.
Tracey mourns the loss of Margate’s outdoor pool, and as a Londoner I’m aware of various campaigns that have gone on over the years to save others. Like London Fields – saved! – and Charlton in Greenwich- which appears to be getting a revamp now.
I’m lucky enough to have Brockwell on my doorstep, which I aim to frequent the moment I feel fit enough to work my pool look…
Shot by 1960’s photographer Slim Aarons, whose poolside glamour books you can buy here. Prepare to weep over the fashion and the pools.
bloody nora….how time’s flown. THREE weeks is that all!! Bet you’re still blooming. x
Love the 1960’s glamour shot …. if only we all looked so good in floral swimming caps 🙂
