(Double) Fantasy room
After Leonard Cohen’s Greek house, another room from popular culture I love is the one John and Yoko are in for the Imagine video. Amazing proportions and pure white, it is perfect for the simple concept of the video, whereby Yoko walks round opening the huge shutters, letting in more and more light as the song goes on.
The room itself is in the Tittenhurst Park mansion the couple shared in Ascot. For Real Reveal fans, here’s a shot of the room before they renovated and knocked down walls.
I was reminded of all this because I was watching the video for Oh Yoko on Youtube. I love the song (much more than Imagine), and the video is an adoring tribute to Yoko’s unique style and spirit – note the pants and tights look, 30 years before Sienna Miller.
It also features lots of shots of Tittenhurst’s grounds, and interior, including a very of-its-time bit of bathroom footage about a minute in. Funny how big baths were considered so glamorous and sexy in the 70s isn’t it?
For more Tittenhurst trivia than you could possibly imagine, or maybe even want, see this blog dedicated to its history.
I have always loved the house in the Imagine video, but I hadn’t thought about it in years. I have had an obsession with authentic Georgian shutters for so long now, I’d lost track of where it originated from. Now I’m beginning to think that perhaps this was it – Top of The Pops circa 1980 – lol! Thanks for jogging my memory, and LOVE your blog. xx (p.s. I am now fortunate enough to have my authentic Georgian shutters – yay!)
Thanks Mrs Sutton! Had an envious look at the shutters on your blog. You just need a white piano and a Yoko-style headband and you’re away
Ah! The sunken, or partly sunken corner big bath. How we aspired to one of those in the seventies. Even better if the floor and steps to the bath were clad in brown shag-pile.
Leaving the toilet lid up is not very feng shui though.
