Design classic dismissed: Egg chair
Last time I asked for nominations of design classics that disgust you, and I got one from our friend at Decorator’s Notebook. Skandi-snobs may want to look away now.
Opening with the version above is perhaps a little unfair, as it is obviously totally gross. However, Decorator’s Notebook nominated Arne Jacobsen’s iconic Egg Chair for being “brash, common and overpriced”. And a regular feature of a certain estate agents somewhat OTT offices.
I can see her point, but I have to say it isn’t on my long list of particular design dislikes. In this advert by Chaplins, for example, it looks dramatic without being too showy and sits perfectly with the moody, organic style of the room.
So, what do you think? Is the Egg Faberge or battery farmed? And if you’ve a design classic you’d like to nominate, I’m all ears.
That patchwork chair is hideous – though I have to admit I’m a big Scandi fan and if I ever win the lottery there’ll be space at That’s not My Age Mansions for a tan leather egg chair!
Call yourself an aspiring lottery winner? You’d be wanting a swarovski-encrusted one, or maybe one with your initials embroidered on the back. Hope you win!
