David Roberts
David Roberts is a fantastic illustrator I discovered during the 30% of my life that goes solely on buying presents for children. He’s worked with various writers to produce books that in, say 30 years, design bloggers will be pillaging pages from to stick in frames for their gallery wall. Maybe sooner.
It’s the detail – look at Miss Lila Greer’s outfit and top knot, her stylish wire bin and the fonts on those architecture books. My son used to kiss every single one of the kids in that multi-cultured class.
The page is taken from Iggy Peck, Architect, and to be honest every page would be worth showing.
I also recommend the drawings in Tyrannosaurus Drip…
And Jack and the FlumFlum Tree – especially the opening spread showing Granny’s bedroom.
The geometric wallpaper, the patchwork quilt, the Mid Century bedside table and even her cup – almost worthy of its very own get-the-look.
I LOVE Tyrannosaurus Drip!!! My 3 year old boy loves it and you’re right, the drawings are really good. There’s more detail in the images the more you look – and watch out for those small dinosaurs hidden in the background 🙂
I also like that the characters pop up in other books – e.g. in Granny’s side table is a small dinosaur.
