Years and years ago, when I was still reading my parent’s Times on a Sunday morning, I saw an amazing photo story series where a photographer had got people to put everything – everything! – in their house out on their front lawns for an overhead photo. Wish I knew who it was… Not showing you that, but these pictures by Korean photographer JeongMee Yoon reminded me of them.
BTW this isn’t a plug for biological determinism or any of that I should add. Yoon’s website has a number of his other photo projects, including surreal shots of the Natural History Museum, and this series, Space-Man-Space, showing people in their shops.
I discovered your lovely blog a few weeks ago but have yet to comment. I used to teach a course in Human Geography for which I used photos like those you described by a photographer named Peter Menzel. He did a book called Material World, which was a study of the average family’s material possessions throughout the world. He has since done a similar (and similarly cool) study on what people in eat over the course of a week.
Thanks Megan! I was a kid when I saw these so really happy to finally find out who they’re by. I think at the time the American houses stuck with me, not least for the logistics of getting everything out of the house.
