Clock off

I’ve recently discovered the blog of talented stylist and author Sania Pell. Her pictures are a real treat, so I hope she won’t mind me borrowing this one to illustrate a THING I REALLY DON’T LIKE.

Yeah, it’s clocks. Deal with it. I get the impression this is one of my more eccentric ‘don’t likes’, as most people appreciate them for being functional and visually pleasing. But I just really can’t get with it. I can see some clocks are nicer than others, and yeah, a load of vintage ones certainly fill a wall, but something about them makes me feel enslaved. Reminding me I’m late. Gimme a decorative calendar any day. What about you? Anyone else a clock hater?

I think I’ve discovered that I may be a clock lover instead! For me, there’s something reassuring about seeing the time of day displayed, enabling that count-down of tasks prior to departure – and I’m talking here of trivia like teeth cleaning, picnic making, hair washing. Then again, there are wonderful days where time doesn’t matter and there’s a magic about ignoring them….. perhaps I’m sitting on the fence on this one.

I love old clock faces but not rows and rows of clocks. The enamelled faces are often really pretty or have beautiful lettering and numbers. GG

Before I posted this comment, I saw only two comments… but the Web page says “3 comments”. Strange.

I know, really, I’m a clock person, because I find it too easy to schlep around the house instead of getting up and doing something useful. Or I need to remind myself that no, I just ate 2 1/2 hours ago, it’s not mealtime yet. (Keeping weight off is hard.)

There was one summer, though, when I just wandered around town, and used my watch mainly… to remind myself what day it was.

I have a fascination for things that count and measure. I like the look and feel of old, mechanical, adding machines much better than modern calculators. I bought a measuring wheel so that I could measure my walks around town.
