Boomerang generation
Jill and I have both just read the memoir of punk band The Slits guitarist Viv Albertine. Lots and lots to enjoy in it, but we were both struck by the freedom they had to be young and skint in London. Squats, bar jobs, midnight rent-flits and lots of time to form a band and be creative. It doesn’t need saying that its an era long gone for today’s recent graduates. Instead more and more twenty-somethings are returning home and trying to make their way in the world from their childhood bedrooms.
I just came across these pictures of American Boomerang-ers, originally shot by Damon Casarez for the New York Times. They seem to capture some of the out-of-placeness of the experience.
I love this one above – it could almost be a photo taken on his first day at school. Take a look at the full set, and article, here.
