Birth place of the hipster
While Ros was diligently covering one of the biggest interiors events of the year I was on holiday in New York. It was an admin error, seriously.
I last went to New York in, I think, 2004 when Sex And The City was still in full swing and all the bars and shops those ladies went to were the ones to earmark for your own tour. Brooklyn? Not so much. Today though, we all know Brooklyn is Where It’s At.
Listen, I didn’t have time to beat around the bush and sniff out the cool new edgy bits of Brookers. I wanted to cut quickly to it at the birth place of the hipster: Williamsburg. Want to see what it looks like?
That there is a tiled house. Stand alone, clashing-prints style. A bit grubby and grafitied to bits, but still. A tiled house.
It was a saturday so there was a lotta flea market action – a huge food market on the riverfront, clothes and crafts, and (above left) plants and succulents on the streets. Awesome, as they say.
I liked seeing what sort of townhouse the original hipster might live in and also, where they get their motorised vehicles fixed. Though of course they all cycle really.
Do you want to see what a hipster garden centre looks like? Ooh it was nice.
The hipsters – ok, I think the original hipsters have all moved to Greenpoint – but whoever those dudes are that are left could be seen hanging out at the Wythe hotel (gorgeous interiors, forgot to photograph it, see it here), this diner place..
and this place…
Some sort of municipal building with a turfed backside overlooking the Hudson and an almighty view of Manhattan.
Wonderous. I love New York and I might return to my island highlights later in the week. For now though, feast your eyes on my loud printed summer wares purchased in Williamsburg.
Not to be worn together. Obviously.
Cool shots –
Love the tiled house !
