Baskets & Brixton
The last time I mentioned my daughter’s bedroom was here, in a flap about what to do with it just before she was born. This week I bought some storage baskets to control her growing collection of tights, socks and other fiddly bits that get lost in that cupboard. They’re African, chosen for their colours from Rachel & Malika’s, in Brixton Village. How you feeling about basketry? I used to hate it, but it seems to have crept into the bit of my brain that says when things are acceptable.
The shop specialises in other bright homewares from Africa, India and Morocco, including blankets, recycled plastic mats and bonkers-looking plastic teapots.
Stuff that I want just a tiny smattering of in the house, for a bit of colour and texture. Just not enough that it can remind me in any way of my childhood piano teacher’s house – the place where tassled wall hangings and carved wood elephant ornaments went to die.
OOOoh I LOVE these.
Get thee to the Village before the party next week, you’ll love it. x
I love the baskets – I’ve always liked a bit of woven-ness, in moderation of course.
I used to drink from one of those coloured teapots when I lived in Uganda – until a child told me they’re actually used for washing ones bum.
Crikey, hopefully you didn’t have a mouth full of tea at the time?
exactly…..just wanted to say that these plastic tea pots are used to wash hands, in lieu of toilet paper and for Muslim rituals ( washing done before prayers)….the basket look lovely
I absolutely love everything in this post! That teapot is outrageous!!! I would plant it with spring bulbs immediately (as you know, that’s my anti-style!!). I have that Ikea ps unit that’s on your first photo. Mine doesn’t look as good as that, I neeeeed some of those baskets! Awesome post!
I love this shop & The Village is very fine, can’t keep away from the place!
Me either – great vintage clothes and am trying to eat my way around all the restaurants. So far not a single bad meal / cake / coffee. Susana – thanks, had no idea that was their use and Anna B that be lovely, but prob only space enough for a few?
