Anyone for a weekend garden party?
Or should that be ‘par-di’? For those of you not in the know (awk-ward!), I’m quoting from Made In Chelsea, the stunningly stilted and icy ‘reality’ show about the sons-of-Sloanes who live, love and ‘work’ in London’s Royal Borough. Many commentators have compiled lists of the exclusive pubs, clubs, wine bars and cafes in SW3 that have featured in the series. However some of the loveliest filming locations in the series are often overlooked – the private gardens at the centre of Chelsea and Knightsbridge squares.
When Binky and Cheska wanted to relax with a spot of dog yoga, or a thorny love-triangle needs to be played out with a game of tennis, it’s these garden squares where it happens. In-depth discussion about Proudlock’s top-knot and whether hapless Stevie was trying to ‘steal his look’? It will have happened on a Balmoral tartan pic-nic rug in one of these pretty – locked – gardens.
There are over 100 of these garden squares in Kensington & Chelsea alone, each with its own planting, character and, often, a tennis court. The gardens are locked, and you only get a key if you live in one of the houses overlooking the square… except for this coming weekend. The annual Open Garden Squares Weekend takes place this Saturday and Sunday, where over 200 gardens across the whole of London are opened to the public (or ‘civilians’ in Chelsea-speak). Among them are a large number of these Chelsea horticultural hang-outs, including 27 of SW3’s finest.
There is even a guided walk around the gardens in neighbouring Belgravia. It’s not billed as a MIC tour but what the hell – sling on a gillet, a huge silly hat or something by Chanel, pack a hamper full of Pimms and get down there. You never know who you might run into… Ciao darlings.
I’d love to explore some of these options. Next trip south I want to do a couple of the walks and perhaps try one of the cycling suggestions.
