Address Book: Whether To Choose a Fridge Freezer to Match your Kitchen

When the concept of the above question was put to me, first thoughts were – yes I can see there is an argument on both sides to this. I like to mix things up a bit myself when it comes to home décor so am inclined to go for contrast in many situations. But on further consideration, and despite years spent honing this mismatched, imperfect, freeform kind of style in my home, I have to say my overriding answer to whether you should choose a fridge freezer to match your kitchen is yes, absolutely yes.

I’d put a black fridge freezer in this kitchen owing to the tiles, walls and cooker

But there are nuances within this idea. If you were to tell me you’re having a pink kitchen? I would not urge you to get a pink fridge freezer (owing to the aforementioned disliking of match matchy things). If the pink kitchen is fitted, streamlined and crisp-edged? I’d say get something built-in with a matching cabinet front, or something just as slick in stainless steel or black. If, on the other hand, you’re going all-white with your cabinetry then go for white or stainless steel. Monochrome? Then black will look brilliant.

The point is, you have to work out what type of kitchen you want – fitted and streamlined, modular and colour-mixed, countrified freestanding or whatever your preference – and then try to pick something that is both practical and perfectly suited in its styling. On that level, the two should match and once you nail the former, you can narrow down the options until you achieve the latter. So if you have a galley kitchen in a tiny room where compact living is required, then a combi fridge-freezer is probably the only way to go and if that kitchen has brushed steel handles, then the obvious thing to do is to choose appliances with the same finish. I can think of just one rule breaker: If you have four kids or more, then invest in an American side-by-side fridge-freezer no matter what else or you’ll be swearing at your appliance daily. If you don’t have the space for it? Consider moving house.*

*I base this on experience of having a small fridge freezer and two kids.

ABSOLUTELY! I have somebody quite close to me who has an awful fridge/freezer, chosen for its design. Give me that big American fridge/freezer any day – holds lots, makes ice…. and has great potential for storing meals ahead, ideal with any number of children. The pictures above make me want a new kitchen, fantastic!

Totally agree! Those big-ass American-style fridges/freezers are perfect for the larger families… provided you can afford one cuz they don’t come cheap.
