A book I want
A friend got it for her birthday last week and rightly identified it as being right up my street. Snapshots of Dangerous Women is a collection of vintage photographs belonging to 60-something New York investment banker Peter J Cohen. He’s been collecting photos from flea markets for 25 years and his apartment is up to its neck in them – 60,000 of them according to this feature. Rather sweetly, Cohen put them together in the book for his sister who, he told The Telegraph, was a strong, independent women and also his good buddy when the two were little.
At first glance it does look as though dangerous mostly translates as drinking, smoking or wearing a bikini with a sultry look on. Closer inspection however reveals shots of ladies with guns, ladies with boxing gloves on, ladies climbing rocks…
…danger, it is quite subjective isn’t it? I now view my new office in Peckham (story about that soon) as dangerous after the ‘church’ next door – it’s in the bussey building, the church is a room on the third floor – started filling dramatically with smoke from a live open fire next door. The pastor came through to apologise, adding “It’s visitors, I told them to stop – the last time the whole place went up.”
Intersting, really. Mostly it could be “just” a dangerous look – trendy among the men as well. Boys lookin all gangster while they wouldn’t hurt a fly or smoking just to look as Ian Curtis (that’s been me).
Dangerous look in fashion – masculinity and femininity. Interesting points to conduct a visual analysis. And a lot of things to look at. What about the women terrorists? (I’m asking about this with no judgement of terrorism – claimed sometimes to be a weapon of the poor & excluded)
as I said, interesting
As far as I can see those are all pretty old pics I’d have to go with something like the mid 60’s and early 70’s. And If I am not mistaken that’s a time when women did not get a lot of freedom and rights to dress, drink or use weapons at will. I know of a story about a woman getting arrested because she was riding a motorcycle while wearing pants… It was a big No-No at that time. So, my guess is that the name of the book is because the women in it are standing up to the established rules.
I will try to get this book for my fiancee too.
Cheers mate
