3D cinema

The best thing that I saw during my recent stay in Warsaw was easy to miss. What looked like a pair of brass binoculars was set into a wall, advertising The Fotoplastikon, a Warsaw attraction since 1905.

We followed the sign through a crumbling courtyard, to this door, inside which it was all faded velvet curtains and Caberet music.

We paid a few Zloty, and went in to a tiny room, full almost to the walls with a many-sided tall wooden box, circled by stools. You take a a seat and put your eyes to the binoculars mounted in the box, and presto, a 3D rendering of a photograph appears.

Every so often there’s a loud clunking and the pictures inside rotate.

The Warsaw Fotoplastikon’s website gives some insights into not just the charm of the attraction, but its role as a meeting place for both Polish Resistance members during the war and wannabe hipsters during Communism. When we went it was all postcards of Switzerland, but they were also advertising an erotica night. Pictures – sadly not in 3D – here.
